Before You Go: Documents, Check-In Times & What to Bring

🚨 Late Arrivals: You Will Be Refused Boarding

If you arrive after check-in closes, Brittany Ferries will refuse you boarding with no refund. The ship will not wait. You will need to purchase a new ticket for the next available sailing. Check-in closing times are strictly enforced at Plymouth Millbay.

Why arrive early? βœ“ Buffer for the A38 and A374 traffic βœ“ Time to find parking βœ“ Time to walk from Beryl e-bike dock or taxi drop βœ“ Relax in the terminal rather than rush βœ“ Time to resolve any unexpected issues β€” lost reference, passport queries, pet document checks βœ“ Time for food and toilets before boarding

πŸ“‹ Essential Documents Checklist

πŸ“„ Booking Confirmation

  • Your Brittany Ferries booking reference number
  • Accepted on phone or printed β€” either works
  • Contains: passenger names, vehicle details, sailing time, cabin or seat booking
  • Lost your reference? Call Brittany Ferries: 0330 159 7000

πŸ›‚ Valid Passports

  • Every passenger needs their own passport β€” including infants
  • Passport books only β€” ID cards not accepted for UK citizens

⚠️ UK Passport Rules for France β€” Both must apply:

  • Issued within the last 10 years
  • At least 3 months’ validity remaining after your departure from France

Passports renewed before October 2018 may show extra months β€” French authorities do not recognise these. Check your issue date, not just the expiry date.

πŸš— Vehicle Documents

  • V5C logbook β€” recommended, essential if stopped by French police
  • Valid UK driving licence
  • Car insurance β€” verify it covers France (check your policy post-Brexit)
  • Hire or lease vehicle β€” carry the hire agreement or VE103 letter
  • Vehicle not registered in your name β€” carry proof of owner’s permission

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§ Travelling With Children

  • Every child needs their own passport β€” no exceptions
  • Child travelling with one parent only β€” carry a signed consent letter from the other parent
  • Children 4–15 travel at half the adult fare. Under 4 free.

🐾 Travelling With Pets

  • Animal Health Certificate (AHC) β€” required since April 2026 for GB residents travelling from GB to EU. Issued by an Official Veterinarian within 10 days of travel.
  • Microchip documentation β€” scanned at check-in
  • Up-to-date rabies vaccination certificate
  • Maximum 5 pets per vehicle (changed April 2026)

🐾 Full pet travel guide β†’

βœ… You Do NOT Need at Check-In

  • Visa β€” UK passport holders don’t need one for France (up to 90 days)
  • Green card β€” not required for UK drivers in France
  • International driving permit β€” not required for UK licence holders
  • Return ferry ticket
  • Travel insurance documents β€” recommended but not checked at check-in

πŸ†• ETIAS β€” Check Before You Travel

The EU’s European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) will require UK citizens to register online before entering France. The scheme has faced multiple delays.

Always check current status at gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/france before you travel.

πŸ’‘ The night before β€” do this now: Gather all documents into one folder β€” booking confirmation, passports for everyone, vehicle papers, pet certificates if applicable. Check every passport’s issue date and expiry date. Screenshot your booking confirmation onto your phone as backup. Pack your overnight bag before you leave home β€” on overnight crossings the car deck is locked for the entire sailing and you cannot retrieve anything from your vehicle.

⏰ Check-In Times at Plymouth Millbay

The times below are when check-in closes. Check-in typically opens when the inbound ship from Roscoff has docked β€” usually around 20:00–20:15 for the 22:00 overnight sailing (Armorique typically arrives Plymouth around this time). There is no benefit in arriving before the ship has docked as check-in will not yet be open.

πŸ“‹ Always check your e-ticket confirmation first. The check-in time shown on your e-ticket is the one that applies to your specific sailing. The times in the table below are the standard Brittany Ferries guidelines β€” your ticket may show a different time.

Passenger Type Check-In Closes For 22:00 Sailing
πŸš— Car / Van / Motorhome / Cyclist / Foot Passenger 45 minutes before Closes 21:15 β€” always check your e-ticket
🐾 Passengers With Pets 90 minutes before Closes 20:30 β€” check your e-ticket
β™Ώ Passengers Needing Special Assistance 60 minutes before Notify BF 48hrs in advance β€” check your e-ticket
🚌 Group Travel (10+) 120 minutes before Closes 20:00

⚠️ Aim to arrive well before check-in closes β€” earlier in peak season. The times above are hard deadlines, not targets. In peak summer (July–August), vehicle queues at Plymouth Millbay can lengthen significantly before major sailings. If there are any unexpected issues at the booth β€” a query on your booking, a vehicle declaration amendment, or a security search β€” additional time is needed. For the 22:00 overnight sailing, arriving by 20:30 or earlier gives you a sensible buffer. Late arrivals are refused boarding with no refund.

Step-by-Step: Checking In at Plymouth Millbay With a Car

Follow Brittany Ferries signs from the A38/A374 into Plymouth β€” the port is signposted as you approach the city centre. The terminal address is Millbay, Plymouth, Devon, PL1 3EW (what3words: ///divide.brick.exam Β· GPS: 50.364711, -4.158544). Vehicle passengers must check in at least 45 minutes before departure β€” always verify the time on your e-ticket. For the typical 22:00 overnight sailing, arriving by 20:30 gives a comfortable buffer. With pets, arrive by 20:30 at the absolute latest.

1
Drive to the Brittany Ferries Check-In Booths β€” Follow Brittany Ferries signs into Plymouth Millbay. Stay in your vehicle and follow directions to the check-in booths. Unlike some ferry ports, Plymouth Millbay does not have a separate height gauge before the check-in lanes β€” vehicles of all heights (motorhomes, vans with roof boxes) proceed directly to the booth. Have your booking reference and all passports ready before you reach the window.
2
Check-In Booth β€” Boarding Card Issued β€” A Brittany Ferries staff member will approach your driver’s window. Have ready: your booking reference and passports for all passengers. Staff will confirm your party, check documents, and issue your boarding card. The boarding card hangs from your interior mirror β€” it identifies your vehicle for the loading team, acts as your cabin key if you’ve booked one, and carries the ship’s Wi-Fi code. The first digit of your cabin number is your deck number. Keep it away from your phone β€” it demagnetises easily. Typical time at the booth: 2–3 minutes.
3
UK Border Force Passport Control & Security β€” After check-in you are directed through UK Border Force passport control β€” all passports are checked, keep them all accessible. Security follows: your vehicle may be selected for a random search. Cooperate fully β€” this is standard on all international sailings. Once cleared, you are directed into numbered holding lanes.
4
Holding Area β€” Park in your designated lane, apply the handbrake, and turn off the engine. You may leave your vehicle and use the terminal building β€” note that dogs are permitted inside Plymouth terminal, which is unusual among UK ferry terminals. Listen carefully for loading announcements. When your lane is called, return to your vehicle promptly and await the marshaller’s signal before moving.
5
Loading onto the Car Deck β€” Port staff directed by the ship’s loading officer guide you on board. Motorcycles and cyclists are typically loaded first, followed by standard cars, then larger vehicles. Motorhomes, campervans, and car-and-caravan outfits are loaded into dedicated areas. The Armorique carries 470 vehicles, the Pont-Aven 650. Drive slowly β€” clearances on the car deck are tight.
6
Park Up, Disable Alarm & Head to Your Cabin β€” Apply the handbrake firmly. Disable your vehicle alarm immediately β€” the ship’s movement during the overnight crossing will trigger it and drain the battery if left active. Note your deck number and nearest exit door. Grab your overnight bag, lock up, and follow signs to the passenger deck lifts or stairs. The car deck is sealed shortly after loading and cannot be accessed during the crossing. Vacate your cabin 30 minutes before arrival at Roscoff.

Step-by-Step: Checking In at Plymouth as a Foot Passenger

Foot passengers at Plymouth Millbay check in inside the terminal building β€” not at the vehicle booths outside. Check in at least 45 minutes before departure (check your e-ticket confirmation for the exact time). One important advantage at Plymouth: foot passengers board via a direct gangway from the terminal building straight onto the ship β€” no bus transfer needed, unlike at many other ferry terminals.

1
Go Directly to the Terminal Building β€” Head to the terminal building at Plymouth Millbay. Do not join the vehicle check-in lanes outside. The terminal building is on your left as you enter the Millbay complex. Dogs are permitted inside Plymouth terminal β€” muzzles are not required here (this changes at Roscoff, where muzzles are required in all port areas). A wheelchair is available on request from the Brittany Ferries desk for boarding assistance. Changing Places facility available β€” key from the Brittany Ferries desk.
2
Check In at the Brittany Ferries Desk β€” Present your booking reference and valid passports for all passengers. Your boarding card will be issued β€” this also acts as your cabin key if you’ve pre-booked one. The first digit of the cabin number is the deck number. The ship’s Wi-Fi code is printed on the boarding card. Keep it away from your mobile phone β€” the magnetic strip demagnetises easily.
3
Use the Terminal Facilities β€” After check-in, relax in the terminal. Facilities include a cafΓ© (open for arrivals and departures), toilets with baby changing, a Changing Places facility (key from BF desk), and a bureau de change (Mon–Fri 09:00–17:15, Sat–Sun 10:30–16:00, plus all arrivals and departures). Terminal opening hours: Mon 09:30–21:30 Β· Tue 09:30–19:30 Β· Wed 09:30–16:00 Β· Thu–Fri 09:30–21:30 Β· Sat 14:30–21:30 Β· Sun 10:00–21:30. Listen for boarding announcements.
4
Passport Control & Security β€” When boarding is announced, proceed to the boarding gate with your boarding card and passport ready. UK Border Force passport control takes place first β€” have your passport open at the photo page. Security screening follows: bags through the X-ray scanner, you through the metal detector arch. Random additional searches may occur. Cooperate fully. The whole process is generally quick for foot passengers at Plymouth.
5
Board via the Direct Gangway β€” Plymouth Millbay has a direct gangway from the terminal building straight onto the ship. You walk aboard carrying your own luggage β€” no bus transfer required. No luggage assistance is provided between the terminal and the ship. If you have reduced mobility or need help with luggage, contact Brittany Ferries at least 48 hours before departure.

πŸ’‘ No bus to the ferry terminal: There is no direct bus from Plymouth North Road station or Plymouth coach station to Millbay terminal. From the station the terminal is 30–35 minutes’ walk or a taxi ride of around Β£5–7. From Plymouth city centre it is approximately 15 minutes on foot. Beryl e-bikes are available at the port and near Plymouth North Road station.

Step-by-Step: Checking In at Plymouth With a Motorbike

Motorbike check-in at Plymouth follows the same process as vehicle passengers β€” join the vehicle check-in lanes and follow the same route through passport control and security. The minimum check-in time is 45 minutes before departure. Motorcycles are typically loaded first, giving bikers the pick of positions on the car deck. Plymouth is an excellent gateway for motorcycle touring in Brittany β€” closer than Portsmouth or Dover for riders from Devon, Cornwall, and Wales.

1
Join the Vehicle Check-In Lanes β€” Follow Brittany Ferries signs to the vehicle check-in booths. Have your booking reference and passport ready. You do not need to remove your helmet at the check-in booth, but your face must be clearly visible. Staff will issue your boarding card β€” keep this safe as it is also your cabin key.
2
Passport Control & Security β€” After check-in, proceed through UK Border Force passport control. Remove your helmet for the passport check β€” your face must be visible for the Border Force officer. After passport control, luggage and panniers go through the X-ray scanner. Keep your helmet, gloves, and all riding gear on while in holding lanes and on the loading ramp β€” surfaces can be slippery.
3
Motorcycle Holding Area & Loading β€” After security, bikes are marshalled into a dedicated motorcycle holding area. Motorcycles are typically the first vehicles to board β€” giving you time to settle before the cars load. Take care on the loading ramp, which can be wet and greasy. Crew will guide you to your parking space and secure your bike with straps. Take your helmet, jacket, and all valuables to your cabin β€” you cannot return to the car deck during the crossing.
4
Disable Your Bike Alarm Before Leaving the Deck β€” This is critical. Switch off your motorcycle alarm or put it into transport mode before the car deck is sealed. The ship’s movement during an 8–11 hour overnight crossing will trigger an armed alarm. Once the car deck is sealed, nobody can silence it β€” and a motorbike alarm running for hours is not acceptable to crew or fellow passengers. Check your owner’s manual before sailing day if you are unsure how to disable it.

πŸ’‘ Pricing reminder: Solo rider + motorbike from Β£58. Two people + one motorbike from Β£106. Two people + sidecar or two motorbikes from Β£130. All one-way fares β€” cabin or reserved seat booked separately for overnight crossings.

Step-by-Step: Check-In & Boarding at Plymouth With a Pet

Travelling with a pet on the Plymouth to Roscoff ferry adds several important steps. The most critical: passengers with pets must arrive at least 90 minutes before departure β€” significantly earlier than the standard 45-minute deadline. Pets must travel in a vehicle β€” foot passengers cannot bring pets on this route. Since April 2026, GB residents require an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) for outbound travel β€” EU pet passports are no longer valid for travel from GB to the EU.

🐾 Pet Documents Required β€” April 2026 Rules

  • Animal Health Certificate (AHC) β€” Required since April 22, 2026 for all GB residents travelling from GB to the EU. Issued by an Official Veterinarian within 10 days of your travel date. Valid for 6 months for onward and return EU travel. EU pet passports are no longer valid for outbound travel from GB.
  • Microchip β€” 15-digit ISO microchip required. Must have been implanted before the rabies vaccination.
  • Rabies vaccination β€” Must be current and recorded in the AHC.
  • Tapeworm treatment (return journey) β€” Dogs returning to the UK must be treated by a vet 24 hours to 5 days before departing France. Book this appointment promptly on arrival in Roscoff.
  • Maximum 5 pets per vehicle β€” changed from 5 per person as of April 2026.
1
Before You Leave Home β€” Allow adequate time for your pet to exercise and go to the toilet before setting off. Don’t give too much food or water immediately before a long journey. Ensure your dog is comfortable wearing a muzzle β€” muzzles are not required at Plymouth terminal, but they are required in all areas of Roscoff port including the shuttle bus and terminal building.
2
Arrive 90 Minutes Before Departure β€” Follow Pet Check-In Lanes β€” For the 22:00 overnight sailing, arrive by 20:30 at the latest. Exercise your pet before joining the check-in queue. Follow designated pet check-in lanes. The pet fee is Β£35+ per pet each way and must be pre-booked β€” it cannot be added at the port.
3
Document Check & Microchip Scan β€” At check-in, your AHC and microchip documentation will be checked and your pet’s microchip scanned. Have all documents accessible. Brittany Ferries will place a pet sticker on your windscreen β€” this must remain in place for the entire voyage and until you have cleared Roscoff port. After document checks, proceed through passport control and vehicle security as normal.
4
Onboard β€” Pet Cabin or Vehicle β€” Pets booked into a pet-friendly cabin travel with you. Settle your pet in the cabin fully before exploring the ship. If your pet remains in the vehicle, settle them in completely before the car deck is sealed β€” you cannot return during the crossing. The pet exercise area is on deck 7 on both ships β€” dogs must be muzzled and on a lead. Unauthorised non-pet cabin: €193.68 fine. Unmuzzled dog in exercise area: €200 fine.
5
Arriving at Roscoff β€” Pet documentation is checked again at Roscoff. Dogs must be muzzled and on a lead throughout all Roscoff port areas β€” this is required, unlike at Plymouth. Once clear of the port, find a safe spot to let your dog exercise and stretch. There is a park on the route from the port into Roscoff town centre. Book your return tapeworm vet appointment as soon as possible after arriving in France.

Step-by-Step: Check-In & Boarding at Plymouth With a Bicycle

Cyclists check in at the terminal building alongside foot passengers β€” not at the vehicle booths. The same 45-minute minimum check-in applies. Beryl e-bikes are docked at Plymouth Millbay port itself, making it straightforward to cycle to the terminal from the city centre or train station. Roscoff is one of Europe’s best cycling destinations β€” the VΓ©lomaritime V7 coastal route begins right outside Port de Bloscon.

1
Arrive at the Terminal Building β€” 45 Minutes Before Departure β€” Head to the terminal building with your bike. Do not join the vehicle check-in lanes. Beryl e-bike docks are at the port if you’ve ridden to Millbay. Foot passenger + bicycle is bookable online from Β£50. Tandems and trailers must be booked by phone on 0330 159 7000.
2
Check In at the Brittany Ferries Desk β€” Present your booking reference, passport, and bicycle. Staff will confirm your bike is on the booking and issue your boarding card. Note: panniers and bags are your personal luggage and come with you through security and to your cabin. You will not be able to access your bike once it is loaded on the car deck.
3
Passport Control & Security β€” When boarding is called, proceed to the boarding gate. Passport control then security β€” panniers will likely need to come off the bike for the X-ray scanner. Allow a few extra minutes for this. Keep everything accessible and cooperate with officers.
4
Board via the Gangway β€” Crew Load Your Bike β€” At Plymouth, cyclists board via the direct gangway from the terminal β€” push your bike aboard (do not ride). A crew member will guide you to where the bike is to be stored on the vehicle deck and secure it for the crossing. Remove all panniers and luggage from the bike and take it to your cabin. Cyclists are often allowed to board before the vehicles, so arriving in good time helps.

Accessible Check-In on the Plymouth to Roscoff Ferry

Plymouth Millbay terminal and both ships on the Plymouth to Roscoff route have facilities for passengers with reduced mobility, disabilities, and other accessibility requirements. The process is the same at both ends of the route. If you need assistance, the key is to notify Brittany Ferries at least 48 hours before departure so arrangements can be made in advance.

1
Notify Brittany Ferries at Least 48 Hours Before Departure β€” Contact Brittany Ferries on 0330 159 7000 (Mon–Fri 09:00–18:00, Sat–Sun 09:00–16:30) to inform them of your requirements. This allows time to arrange boarding assistance, accessible cabin allocation, and any specialist support needed. The wheelchair-accessible cabin on Armorique is limited β€” book as early as possible. This step is essential; arrangements cannot always be made at short notice.
2
At Plymouth Terminal β€” Changing Places & Wheelchair β€” Plymouth Millbay terminal has a Changing Places facility β€” collect the key from the Brittany Ferries desk. A wheelchair is available on request from the Brittany Ferries desk for boarding assistance. Check in at least 60 minutes before departure and inform staff again of your requirements on arrival.
3
Boarding Arrangements β€” Staff will direct you to board at the appropriate time. Boarding arrangements vary depending on your specific requirements. Wait in the terminal until staff direct you β€” do not attempt to join the vehicle loading queue without guidance.
4
Onboard the Armorique or Pont-Aven β€” The wheelchair-accessible cabin on Armorique has two lower berths and an adapted bathroom. Cinemas on both ships are NOT wheelchair accessible. The information desk is open 24 hours and crew are available for assistance throughout the crossing. The Autism booklet is available on request at check-in on both ships.
5
Arriving at Roscoff β€” The shuttle bus connecting the ship to Roscoff terminal is ramp-equipped and fully wheelchair accessible. Staff are available to assist throughout. Contact Brittany Ferries in advance if you require specific disembarkation assistance at Roscoff.

What You Can and Cannot Bring

Security screening applies to all passengers at Plymouth Millbay before boarding. The rules below apply to all passengers regardless of travel type.

πŸ” What to Expect at Security

Security at Plymouth Millbay is not the same as airport security. Key differences:

  • No liquid restrictions β€” you can carry water bottles and liquids of any size. There is no 100ml rule on ferries.
  • Electronics stay in your bag β€” laptops and tablets do not need to be removed before X-ray.
  • No photography in security areas β€” mobile phones and dash cams must be switched off before entering the security area.
  • Remove your helmet and earphones β€” before passing through the detection arch.
  • Metal detection arches are pacemaker-safe β€” inform a security officer if you have a medical implant for a hand search instead.
  • You, your bags, and your vehicle may all be searched β€” random searches are standard on all international sailings. Refusal may result in being denied boarding.

βœ… Permitted β€” In Your Vehicle

  • Petrol or diesel β€” up to 5 litres per vehicle in a sealed, purpose-made fuel canister. Declare to a ship’s officer before boarding.
  • Camping gas cylinders β€” up to 3 cylinders, combined weight not exceeding 47kg. Gas valves must be shut off and disconnected before loading.
  • Sporting firearms β€” vehicles only. Must be declared at time of booking and again at check-in. Valid certificate required. Out of sight in vehicle. Maximum 100 cartridges per firearm.
  • Knives and bladed tools in a vehicle β€” secured and out of reach only. Never on your person in the terminal or onboard.

❌ Strictly Prohibited β€” All Passengers

  • Knives and blades on your person or in luggage β€” no blades permitted for foot passengers regardless of type or size. Includes penknives, multitools, and Swiss army knives. Knife amnesty boxes are at the security checkpoint entrance.
  • Fireworks β€” strictly forbidden in all circumstances.
  • Firearms in foot passenger luggage β€” no exceptions.
  • Lifejackets with CO2 cylinders β€” not permitted as hand luggage. Flares may be stored by crew on request β€” declare at check-in.
  • Replica firearms β€” replica guns, BB guns, or anything resembling a firearm.
  • Any item that could be used as a weapon β€” security staff will confiscate anything judged capable of causing injury.

❌ Cannot Bring INTO the UK (on return)

Due to UK Government restrictions, you cannot bring meat, dairy or other animal products into the UK from France. This includes:

  • Charcuterie, cheese, and pre-packaged food containing animal products
  • Duty-free items containing animal products
  • Any fresh, chilled, or frozen meat or dairy

Items found at the UK border will be confiscated and may result in a fine. Check gov.uk for the current list before travelling.

❌ Cannot Bring INTO France (from UK)

You generally cannot bring the following into the EU from the UK:

  • Products of animal origin (meat, dairy, eggs)
  • Plants and plant products
  • Soil or growing medium

For detailed guidance see douane.gouv.fr (French Customs).

⚠️ Important Security Notes

  • The prohibited items list is not exhaustive. If in doubt about an item, contact Brittany Ferries before your sailing day.
  • Port security staff have the legal right to search you, your luggage, and your vehicle. Refusal may result in being denied boarding.
  • Photography is not permitted in security areas β€” including mobile phones. Dash cams must be switched off.
  • Keep your luggage with you at all times in the port. Do not leave bags unattended.

Common Check-In Mistakes to Avoid

These are the most common reasons passengers run into problems at Plymouth Millbay. Every one of them is avoidable with a small amount of preparation before you leave home.

❌ Mistake 1: Arriving Too Late

Problem: Check-in closes 45 minutes before departure. For the 22:00 sailing, arriving at 21:20 means you risk being refused boarding β€” with no refund.

Fix: Aim to be at the check-in booth by 20:30 at the latest. Allow extra time for the A38 and A374 during peak season, and for finding a parking space.

❌ Mistake 2: Passport Checked Too Late

Problem: Discovering the night before that a passport expired or was issued more than 10 years ago β€” no time to renew.

Fix: Check every passport at least 8 weeks before travel. Check both issue date (within 10 years) and expiry date (3+ months beyond your return from France).

❌ Mistake 3: Wrong Vehicle Dimensions Declared

Problem: Booking as a standard car but arriving with a roof box, bike rack, or undeclared caravan that changes the vehicle category. Surcharges may be applied at check-in.

Fix: Measure your vehicle including all roof equipment. Declare caravans at booking as “car with trailer.” Rear-mounted bike carriers: add Β£15+ at booking.

❌ Mistake 4: No Booking Confirmation to Hand

Problem: The confirmation email was deleted and the phone has no signal at the port. This causes delays.

Fix: Screenshot your booking confirmation to your phone before leaving home. Write down your booking reference separately. A printed copy is a reliable backup.

❌ Mistake 5: Wrong Pet Documents

Problem: Arriving with an EU pet passport for outbound travel. Since April 2026, EU pet passports are no longer valid for GB residents travelling from GB to the EU. An AHC is now required.

Fix: Book an Official Veterinarian appointment to obtain an AHC within 10 days of travel. Start this process at least 8 weeks ahead β€” OV appointments can be in short supply in peak season.

❌ Mistake 6: Knife in Foot Passenger Luggage

Problem: A penknife, multitool, or Swiss army knife in a backpack. All blades are confiscated at Plymouth Millbay security regardless of size.

Fix: Transfer bladed tools to your vehicle before entering the terminal. Foot passengers without a vehicle should leave them at home or use the knife amnesty box at the security entrance.

❌ Mistake 7: Vehicle Alarm Not Disabled

Problem: The ship’s movement triggers the alarm on a sealed car deck. It runs for hours, disturbs crew and passengers, and drains the battery β€” leaving it flat on arrival at Roscoff.

Fix: Put your vehicle into transport/shipping mode or disable the alarm before leaving the car deck. Test this before sailing day β€” consult your owner’s manual if unsure. Same applies to caravan alarms.

❌ Mistake 8: Assuming There’s a Bus from Plymouth Station

Problem: Arriving at Plymouth North Road station and expecting a direct bus to the ferry terminal β€” there isn’t one. Foot passengers are sometimes caught out by this, especially at night.

Fix: Plan your onward journey from the station in advance. From Plymouth North Road it’s 30–35 minutes’ walk, a taxi of around Β£5–7, or a Beryl e-bike (docked near the station). From the city centre it’s 15 minutes on foot.

Expert Tips for a Smooth Check-In at Plymouth Millbay

Small actions before you leave home make everything at Plymouth Millbay significantly smoother. These tips come from experienced Plymouth to Roscoff travellers.

βœ“ Check Passports 8 Weeks Out

Check every passport in the household at least 8 weeks before travel β€” enough time to renew if needed. Verify both the issue date (within 10 years) and expiry date (3+ months beyond your return from France). Include children’s passports.

βœ“ Pack Your Overnight Bag Before You Leave Home

The car deck is sealed once the ship sails β€” you cannot retrieve anything from your vehicle. Pack your overnight bag (passport, medication, toiletries, change of clothes, phone charger) before you set off from home, not in the car park at Millbay.

βœ“ Test Your Alarm Disable Method Before Sailing Day

Don’t work out how to disable your vehicle alarm while parked in the check-in lane. Test it at home β€” check your owner’s manual. The method varies by make and model. Same applies to caravan alarms and motorbike alarms.

βœ“ Try the Barbican Before Your Crossing

Plymouth’s Barbican area β€” the historic harbour quarter β€” is about 15 minutes’ walk from Millbay. Excellent restaurants and pubs, and a lovely pre-sailing atmosphere. If you’re arriving in Plymouth ahead of the evening departure, it’s well worth a visit. Plymouth Hoe is equally close and brilliant for a sunset walk before boarding.

βœ“ Use the Bureau de Change at the Terminal

Plymouth Millbay has a bureau de change open Mon–Fri 09:00–17:15 and Sat–Sun 10:30–16:00, plus all arrivals and departures. Pick up your euros here rather than at the airport or on the ship. Payment accepted in euros or sterling on board, cash or card.

βœ“ Add 30 Minutes in Peak Season

In July and August, vehicle queues at Millbay are longer before major sailings. The A38 and A374 can also be congested on summer evenings. Add at least 30 extra minutes to your planned arrival time in peak season.

βœ“ Turn Off Data Roaming Before You Board

Once at sea, your phone may connect to a maritime offshore network not covered by UK roaming allowances. Turn off mobile data roaming before boarding. Connect to ‘Brittany Ferries Connected’ for the ship’s Wi-Fi. If the login page doesn’t appear automatically, visit getwifi.no. Keep your cabin keycard away from your phone β€” it demagnetises easily.

βœ“ Bring a UK Adaptor for Your Cabin

All cabins on both ships have continental 2-pin sockets (220v) plus a 110v shaving socket β€” not UK 3-pin plugs. Bring a UK to European adaptor from home. Adaptors are occasionally available from the onboard boutique but stock is limited and they sell out.

Plymouth to Roscoff Ferry Check-In: Frequently Asked Questions

What time do I need to check in for the Plymouth to Roscoff ferry?

All passengers β€” vehicles, foot passengers, and cyclists β€” must check in at least 45 minutes before departure. Passengers with pets must arrive at least 90 minutes before. Passengers needing special assistance should check in at least 60 minutes before. Always check your e-ticket confirmation as the time shown there applies to your specific sailing. For the typical 22:00 overnight sailing, arriving at the check-in booth by 20:30 gives a sensible buffer.

What documents do I need at Plymouth Millbay check-in?

You need your Brittany Ferries booking reference and valid passports for all passengers. UK passport books only β€” ID cards are not accepted for travel to France. Passports must be less than 10 years old from issue date and have at least 3 months’ validity remaining after your return from France. If travelling with pets, bring your Animal Health Certificate (AHC) and microchip documentation. Vehicle documents (V5C, driving licence, insurance) are recommended to carry in France even if not checked at Plymouth.

Do foot passengers check in at the same place as vehicles at Plymouth?

No. Foot passengers and cyclists go directly to the terminal building β€” not the vehicle check-in booths. Inside the terminal, the Brittany Ferries check-in desk handles foot passenger check-in. Foot passengers then board via a direct gangway from the terminal building straight onto the ship β€” no bus transfer is required at Plymouth, which is different from many other ferry ports.

Is there passport control at Plymouth when boarding the ferry?

Yes. UK Border Force passport checks take place at Plymouth Millbay before boarding. For vehicle passengers, passports are checked at the check-in booths. For foot passengers and cyclists, passport control takes place at the boarding gate. French border control takes place at Roscoff on arrival. All passengers including infants require a valid passport β€” no other ID is accepted.

What is the boarding card and what does it do?

Your boarding card is issued at Plymouth check-in. For vehicle passengers, it hangs from the interior mirror to identify your vehicle to the loading team. If you have a cabin booked, it acts as your cabin key β€” the first digit of the cabin number is your deck number. The ship’s Wi-Fi password is printed on it. Keep it safe throughout the entire journey and away from your mobile phone β€” the magnetic strip demagnetises easily if stored with a phone.

Can I use the Plymouth Millbay terminal while waiting to board?

Yes. Vehicle passengers who have checked in may leave their vehicles and use the terminal before boarding is called. Facilities include a cafΓ©, toilets with baby changing, Changing Places (key from BF desk), and bureau de change. Dogs are permitted inside Plymouth terminal β€” muzzles not required. Listen carefully for tannoy announcements to return to your vehicle when boarding is called. Foot passengers and cyclists can use the terminal freely after check-in until boarding.

What happens if I miss the Plymouth to Roscoff check-in deadline?

If you miss the check-in deadline, Brittany Ferries may deny you boarding even if the ship has not yet departed. Contact Brittany Ferries on 0330 159 7000 immediately. The outcome depends on your ticket type: Flexi tickets can be amended up to 4 hours before sailing with no fee. Standard tickets carry a Β£20 amendment fee (Β£30 if through the Contact Centre). Early Bird tickets also carry a Β£20 amendment fee with no refund on cancellation. All tickets are valid for 12 months from the original travel date.

How does check-in work for motorbikes at Plymouth?

Motorcyclists join the vehicle check-in lanes at Plymouth Millbay. Have your booking reference and passport ready. You don’t need to remove your helmet at the booth but your face must be visible. After check-in, bikes are marshalled into a dedicated motorcycle holding area. Helmets must be worn when your bike is in motion including on the loading ramp. Always disable your bike alarm before the car deck is sealed β€” ship movement during the overnight crossing will trigger armed alarms and drain the battery.
