Do You Need a Cabin on the Plymouth to Roscoff Ferry?

The short answer is yes — if you are travelling on any overnight sailing. A cabin or reserved lounge seat is compulsory on all overnight Plymouth to Roscoff crossings. You cannot travel on an overnight sailing without booking one or the other. The car deck is sealed once the ship is at sea.

On daytime sailings, a cabin is not required. However, cabins are available at a reduced daytime rate on all day crossings — useful if you want privacy, somewhere to rest, or simply a guaranteed quiet space during the sailing. If you suffer from seasickness, lying flat in a private cabin is considerably more effective than sitting in a public lounge.

💡 Reserved lounge seats vs cabins: On both Armorique and Pont-Aven, reserved lounge seats are available as a lower-cost alternative to a full cabin on overnight sailings. These are recliner chairs in a dedicated lounge area. Sleep packs (pillow, blanket, eye shade and earplugs) and shower packs can be purchased on board. If you’re travelling solo on a budget, a reserved seat is the most affordable option — but for anything longer than a short overnight, a cabin is significantly more comfortable.

Why We Always Recommend Booking a Cabin

The Plymouth to Roscoff crossing is a long one — the overnight sailing is 8 to 10 hours depending on tides, and even the daytime crossing is over 5 hours. That is a significant amount of time to be on a ship. A reserved seat will get you across, but a cabin is a genuinely different experience — and in our view, worth it for almost everyone.

🛁

Your own bathroom

Every cabin on both ships has an ensuite shower room. On a long overnight crossing, being able to shower and freshen up before arriving in France makes a real difference — you step off the ship feeling ready for the day rather than rumpled from a night in a chair.

🛏️

A proper place to lie down

Even if you are not planning to sleep, lying flat on a bed is infinitely more comfortable than sitting in a reclining seat for hours. If the sea is rough, lying down is also far better for seasickness than sitting upright. A bunk with fresh bedding beats any chair.

🔋

Charging & your own space

Your cabin has plug sockets for charging phones, tablets and laptops — so you arrive with full batteries. It also gives you a private place to store your bags, get changed, and have some quiet time when you want it. You are not competing with other passengers for a socket or a seat in a shared lounge.

👨‍👩‍👧

Especially good for families

A cabin is a godsend with children. You have somewhere to put them to bed, somewhere to store bags and travel kit, and a space to sit together playing cards, watching films on a tablet or just relaxing while they sleep. Kids genuinely love the bunk beds — for many, it is a highlight of the trip.

💡 The cabin is your base — not your cage

One thing worth saying clearly: booking a cabin does not mean spending the whole crossing inside it. The bar, restaurant, sun deck and lounges are all available to everyone regardless of cabin grade. The cabin is simply your home base — somewhere to stow your bags, charge your devices, sleep comfortably and freshen up before arriving in France. You can have dinner in the restaurant, watch the sea from the deck, have a drink at the bar, then retreat to your cabin when you are ready. It is a much more relaxed way to travel than being anchored to a seat in a shared lounge for the whole journey.

The Two Ships — Armorique vs Pont-Aven

Which ship you sail on depends on which crossing you book — the ship is confirmed in your booking details. Here is what matters for cabin selection between the two:

🚢 Armorique

Built specifically for Plymouth–Roscoff in 2009. Operates the majority of sailings on this route. 247 cabins and 336 reserved lounge seats.

  • 7 cabin grades including Club Plus and Club
  • Top grade: Club Plus (breakfast included, no balcony)
  • Pet-friendly: outside 4-berth, inside 4-berth, inside 2-berth
  • Wheelchair accessible 2-berth outside cabin
  • Reserved lounge seats available
  • Continental 2-pin sockets — UK adaptor required
  • No Commodore, no balcony cabins

⭐ Pont-Aven

Brittany Ferries’ flagship ship. Operates selected sailings (Tuesday overnights in 2026, Thursday in 2027). 2,400 passengers, 650 cars, 650 cabins.

  • 9 cabin grades including Commodore and De Luxe
  • Top grade: Commodore (balcony, Video on Demand, breakfast)
  • De Luxe: access to Commodore lounge, VOD, breakfast — no balcony
  • Pet-friendly: outside 4-berth and inside 4-berth
  • Wheelchair accessible 4-berth outside cabin
  • Reserved lounge seats available
  • Continental 2-pin sockets — UK adaptor required

⚠️ Important: If you specifically want a Commodore cabin with balcony, or access to the Commodore private lounge, you must check that your sailing operates on the Pont-Aven — these cabin grades do not exist on the Armorique. Similarly, Club Plus cabins (with complimentary breakfast) are an Armorique-only grade. Check the ship confirmed in your booking before selecting a cabin type. To request a specific cabin or deck number, call Brittany Ferries on 0330 159 7000 (Mon–Fri 09:00–18:00, Sat–Sun 09:00–16:30).

Sleep packs (pillow, blanket, eye shade and earplugs) can be purchased from the information desk. Shower packs are also available to purchase to use the onboard showers. Reserved seats are not equivalent to a cabin — there is no private space, no ensuite, and no lying flat — but for a solo budget traveller they are a viable option on the overnight crossing.

Pont-Aven — Complete Cabin Guide

All Pont-Aven cabins are spread across decks 5, 6 and 8 and include en-suite bathroom, air conditioning, fresh bed linen and towels, soap and shower gel, and at least one continental 2-pin socket (220v) plus a 110v shaving socket. UK passengers need a travel adaptor — pack your own as boutique stock is limited. 💺 Reserved Lounge Seats — Pont-Aven

The same considerations apply as on Armorique — reserved seats are the most affordable overnight option but are not equivalent to a cabin in comfort.

Which Plymouth to Roscoff Ferry Cabin Should You Book?

The overnight crossing leaves Plymouth at 22:00 and arrives Roscoff from 07:00 onwards (tidal dependent) — so most of the time will be spent asleep. With that in mind, here is honest guidance by party type:

👫 Couples

Best pick: Armorique Club Plus (if on Armorique) for breakfast in cabin — excellent value. On Pont-Aven, the Commodore cabin offers the balcony experience and is worth considering for a special occasion. For a standard overnight, the 2-berth inside cabin on either ship is perfectly comfortable and the most affordable private option.

👨‍👩‍👧 Families (3–4 people)

Best pick: Armorique Club Plus 4-berth is outstanding value for family-friendly travel — breakfast included, porthole window, bunk beds that children love. On Pont-Aven, the 4-berth outside cabin or Commodore (for families who want the full experience) work well. The 4-berth inside is the budget option — compact but functional. Children generally sleep well in bunk-style beds on overnight crossings.

💼 Solo Travellers

Best pick: Reserved lounge seat is the most affordable option and works well for a solo overnight if you are a light sleeper. For more comfort, the 2-berth inside cabin on either ship is the next step up — you pay for one berth but get a private ensuite space. Worth it for most people for anything beyond the shortest crossing.

🐾 Travelling with Pets

Best pick: Pet-friendly 4-berth outside cabin on either ship for a family with a pet — window, laminate flooring, space for an animal bed. The 2-berth inside pet cabin on Armorique suits a couple with a small dog or cat. Book at least 3 months ahead for peak season — pet cabins sell out quickly on both ships. Check-in is 90 minutes before departure when travelling with pets. Full pet travel guide →

👶 Travelling with a Baby

Best pick: Any cabin on either ship — cots for infants up to 24 months are available on both Armorique and Pont-Aven at no extra charge. Select “infant travelling” at the start of booking and the cot option appears at the accommodation step. The cot will be made up and waiting in your cabin. Maximum one cot per cabin. Bring your own blankets — only an undersheet is provided.

♿ Reduced Mobility Passengers

Best pick: Wheelchair accessible 2-berth outside cabin on Armorique, or wheelchair accessible 4-berth outside cabin on Pont-Aven. Both feature wheelchair-adapted bathrooms, alarm and telephone. Availability is very limited on both ships — book as early as possible and contact Brittany Ferries directly on 0330 159 7000. Accessible travel guide →

⏳ How far ahead should you book? Club Plus cabins on Armorique and Commodore cabins on Pont-Aven are the first to sell out — particularly on overnight summer sailings. Book at least 3 months ahead for July and August, and 6–8 weeks ahead for shoulder season. Pet-friendly cabins on both ships fill up very quickly. Standard inside cabins have more availability but still sell in school holidays. Brittany Ferries opens bookings up to 12 months in advance.

Plymouth to Roscoff Ferry Cabin Prices

The prices below are the starting prices direct from Brittany Ferries. What you actually pay depends on a number of factors — when you are travelling, how far ahead you book, whether it is an overnight or daytime sailing, and what time of year. Prices increase as demand rises, particularly in peak summer (July–August), over school holidays, and on Friday and Saturday sailings. The earlier you book, the lower the price — and the more choice of cabin grade.

💡 One important note: Reserved seats (the recliner chairs) are the only accommodation option where the price stays fixed at £10 per person regardless of when you book or what time of year. Every cabin grade is dynamic pricing — the same cabin can cost significantly more in August than it does in April.

💡 Can I get a cabin cheaper on the day?

Occasionally — particularly on off-peak daytime sailings — unsold cabins are offered at a reduced walk-up price from the information desk once you are on board. If you get lucky, this can be a good deal. However, we would not recommend relying on it. On overnight sailings and anything in peak season, there is a high chance every cabin is already taken. And even if something is available, it may well be a grade or location you would not have chosen. If you want a specific cabin type — especially pet-friendly, Club Plus, Commodore or any wheelchair-accessible grade — book in advance. The walk-up option is an occasional bonus, not a strategy.

📅 Tips for getting the best cabin price

  • Book as early as possible — Brittany Ferries opens bookings up to 12 months in advance and starting prices are lowest when availability first opens
  • Travel mid-week (Sunday to Thursday) rather than Fridays and Saturdays
  • Avoid school holidays and peak summer if you have flexibility — April, May, September and October offer the best value
  • A 4-berth cabin split between four people is often cheaper per head than two separate 2-berth cabins
  • Daytime sailings carry a reduced cabin rate compared to overnight sailings on the same route

Travelling with a Baby — Cots on Both Ships

Both Armorique and Pont-Aven allow you to pre-book a cot in your cabin for infants up to 24 months. The cot will be made up and waiting in your cabin when you board. To book, select that an infant is travelling at the start of the booking process — the cot option then appears at the accommodation step. Maximum one cot per cabin.

Cot Specifications (identical on both ships)

Width at base: 77cm
Width at top: 50cm
Mattress width: 60cm
Height: 65cm
Length: 110cm

Materials: Canvas and mesh 100% polyester. Bed linen: 65% polyester, 35% cotton. Certified to Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Class 1. An undersheet is provided — bring your own blankets. Children must be supervised at all times.

Plymouth to Roscoff Ferry Cabins — Essential Practical Tips

🔑 Your Cabin Key

Your boarding card is your cabin key — you receive it at check-in. The cabin number is at the bottom of the card and the first digit indicates which deck your cabin is on. One key is issued per passenger. Foot passengers need their key when boarding. If lost, visit the information desk with your travel documents to have it reissued.

⏰ When to Vacate

You must vacate your cabin 30 minutes before the ship arrives in port. An alarm call is played in all cabins approximately one hour before arrival — the wake-up music is Dihun – Le Réveil by Carlos Núñez from his Celtic Sea album. Leaving on time is essential to avoid delaying disembarkation for other passengers.

🔌 Plug Sockets & Adaptors

All cabins on both Armorique and Pont-Aven have continental 2-pin sockets (220v) plus a 110v shaving socket. There are no UK 3-pin sockets. UK passengers need a travel adaptor for phone chargers, hairdryers and any UK-plug devices. Adaptors are sold in the onboard boutique subject to availability — pack your own to guarantee you have one.

🛁 Towels & Bedding

One medium towel per berth is provided in every cabin. All berths have bedding, which is changed before every departure. Soap and shower gel are included in all cabins. Club Plus cabins on Armorique and Commodore/De Luxe cabins on Pont-Aven include complimentary toiletries — all other cabins receive standard soap and shower gel.

🧳 What to Bring to Your Cabin

There is no luggage handling service — carry everything yourself between the terminal and your cabin. Leave the bulk of your luggage in the car and bring only what you need for the overnight: toiletries, night clothes, phone charger, travel adaptor, travel documents, medication. Cabins have storage shelving and hooks for bags so there is somewhere to put things — but space is limited, especially in 2-berth inside cabins. All berths have duvets and pillows provided. Once the ship sails, access to the car deck is prohibited until disembarkation.

🌊 Rough Weather & Motion

Both ships have a modern stabiliser system designed to keep motion manageable even in unsettled conditions, but the western English Channel can be choppy. If you or anyone in your party is prone to motion sickness, mid-ship cabins on the middle decks experience the least movement. Lying flat in your cabin is far more effective than sitting upright in a lounge. Do not try to stay on deck in rough weather — go to your cabin, lie down and keep the air conditioning on.

🚭 Smoking & Vaping

All enclosed areas of both ships are non-smoking. Electronic cigarettes and vaping are also prohibited in all indoor areas including cabins. Passengers may smoke on the outdoor decks only. Smoking in a cabin would be a serious breach of Brittany Ferries’ rules.

Plymouth to Roscoff Ferry Cabins — Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a cabin on the Plymouth to Roscoff overnight ferry?

Yes — a cabin or reserved lounge seat is compulsory on all overnight Plymouth to Roscoff sailings. You cannot travel on an overnight crossing without booking one or the other. On daytime sailings, a cabin is not required, though you can book one at a reduced daytime rate for privacy or comfort.

What is the difference between an inside and outside cabin on the Plymouth Roscoff ferry?

Outside cabins have a small porthole window; inside cabins have no window — usually a mirror or picture in its place. Outside cabins cost more but provide natural light and a sea view. For an overnight crossing where you will mostly be asleep, many passengers find inside cabins perfectly adequate. If you want to watch the approach into Roscoff in the morning, an outside cabin is worth the extra.

What is a Commodore cabin on the Plymouth to Roscoff ferry?

The Commodore cabin is the top grade available on the Pont-Aven (not available on Armorique). It is the only Plymouth to Roscoff ferry cabin with a private balcony. It includes twin beds plus sofabed or recess bed, TV with Video on Demand, tea and coffee, minibar (soft drinks), complimentary continental breakfast in cabin (or hot drinks on some sailings), complimentary coffee/tea/mineral water, a box of macaroons, and complimentary toiletries. These are in very high demand — book early.

What is the difference between Club Plus and Club cabins on Armorique?

Both are 4-berth outside cabins with porthole windows and bunk-style beds. Club Plus is slightly larger and includes complimentary continental breakfast (or hot drinks) served in your cabin, a minibar of soft drinks, a box of macaroons, a TV and DVD player, and complimentary toiletries. Club cabins include a TV and tea and coffee facilities but no breakfast or minibar. Club Plus is worth the upgrade, particularly for a family where the breakfast alone represents good value.

What are reserved lounge seats on the Plymouth to Roscoff ferry?

Reserved lounge seats are recliner chairs in a dedicated onboard lounge — a lower-cost alternative to a full cabin. They are available on both Armorique (336 seats) and Pont-Aven (47 seats). You can purchase a sleep pack on board containing a pillow, blanket, eye shade and earplugs. Shower packs are also available. Reserved seats are priced per person rather than per cabin. They are a viable option for solo budget travellers, but for families or longer crossings a cabin is significantly more comfortable.

Can I choose my cabin number or deck on the Plymouth to Roscoff ferry?

Not when booking online — Brittany Ferries does not currently allow selection of a specific cabin or deck number through their website. If you have a preference (lower decks tend to be more stable in rough seas), contact Brittany Ferries directly on 0330 159 7000 (Mon–Fri 09:00–18:00, Sat–Sun 09:00–16:30) after booking and they may be able to accommodate requests subject to availability.

Are towels and bedding provided in Plymouth to Roscoff ferry cabins?

Yes. One medium towel per berth is provided in every cabin on both ships. All berths have suitable bedding, changed before every departure. Soap and shower gel are included in all cabins. Club Plus (Armorique) and Commodore/De Luxe (Pont-Aven) grades include complimentary toiletries; all other cabin grades receive standard soap and shower gel.

What plug sockets are in Plymouth to Roscoff ferry cabins?

All cabins on both Armorique and Pont-Aven have continental 2-pin sockets (220v) and a 110v shaving socket. There are no UK 3-pin sockets on either ship. UK passengers need a travel adaptor to use standard UK-plug devices such as phone chargers and hair dryers. Adaptors are available to purchase from the onboard boutique, subject to availability — pack your own to be safe.

Are pets allowed in Plymouth to Roscoff ferry cabins?

Pets are only permitted in designated pet-friendly cabins or the onboard kennels — never in standard cabins or public indoor areas. Taking a pet into a non-pet-friendly cabin incurs a deep cleaning charge of €193.68 (rising to €387.36 for repeat offences). Dogs must be muzzled and on a lead in the outdoor exercise area — a €200 fine applies for non-compliance (€400 repeat). Guide dogs are exempt from kennel restrictions and standard cabin rules. Both Armorique and Pont-Aven have pet-friendly cabins and outdoor exercise areas.

How much does a cabin cost on the Plymouth to Roscoff ferry?

Plymouth to Roscoff ferry cabin prices start from approximately £44 for a basic cabin and £10+ for a reserved seat. Prices vary significantly by sailing date, season and demand. As a guide: reserved lounge seats from ~£10 per person; standard inside cabins from ~£44; outside cabins from ~£55; Club cabins from ~£75; Club Plus from ~£95; Commodore from ~£130. Peak season (July–August) and Friday/Saturday sailings cost considerably more than mid-week spring or autumn crossings. Cabin prices are per cabin, not per person — a 4-berth cabin shared between four people offers much better value per head than individual seats or 2-berth cabins. Book early for the best prices.
