Car Passengers Guide

Travelling with your car to France

The most popular way to travel on the Plymouth to Roscoff ferry. Drive onto the ship at Plymouth Millbay, park on the vehicle deck, then enjoy the crossing from the passenger decks above. Your car stays on the vehicle deck for the duration — you cannot return to it during the sailing. On arrival at Roscoff, drive straight off into Brittany. No tolls on Breton roads, and France’s speed limit network means driving is relaxed from the moment you leave the port.

✓ Key facts for car passengers:

  • Car + 2 passengers from £117 one way (max height 2.60m, max length 6m)
  • Van/people carrier from £150 (max height 4m, max length 9m)
  • Rear-mounted bike carrier: from £15 extra per crossing
  • Roof boxes and roof racks included in height measurement — measure before booking
  • You cannot return to your vehicle during the crossing — take everything you need to your cabin or the passenger decks before sailing
⏰ Check-in: At least 45 minutes before departure. Drive to Plymouth Millbay, follow Brittany Ferries signs to the check-in lanes. Have your booking reference and passports ready.
🛏️ Overnight sailings: A cabin or reserved seat is compulsory for all vehicle passengers on overnight crossings. Book your cabin at the same time as your crossing — they sell out faster than the sailing itself.
🇫🇷 On arrival: All roads from Roscoff port are toll-free throughout Brittany. Drive straight off the ferry and into France — no border controls for passengers.

Daytime vs Overnight Crossings

The Plymouth to Roscoff ferry runs both daytime and overnight sailings — and they are quite different experiences. Which you get depends on the date you travel and which ship is operating.

🌞 Daytime Crossings

Pont-Aven: Selected Fridays, departs Plymouth 13:45, arrives Roscoff ~20:00 French time. Crossing time roughly 5h15–6.5 hours. Armorique: Additional daytime sailings operate during peak summer (July–August), with morning departures around 07:30–08:00. On daytime sailings a cabin or reserved seat is optional — a reserved seat costs from £10 and guarantees you a recliner on deck 6.

🌙 Overnight Crossings

Armorique: Most nights, departs Plymouth 22:00, arrives Roscoff 08:00 or 10:15 (tidal variation of up to 1 hour). Crossing time 8–11 hours. Pont-Aven: Selected Tuesdays, departs 20:00, arrives Roscoff 06:30. All passengers on overnight sailings must book either a cabin or a reserved seat — you cannot board without one. The car deck is locked for the entire crossing.

🛏️ Cabin or Reserved Seat?

A reserved seat (from £10, fixed price) is a recliner on deck 6 — the cheapest option but not ideal for a full night’s sleep. A cabin gives you a private room with ensuite bathroom, fresh bed linen, towels, and soap. Cabins are priced per cabin, not per person — a 4-berth cabin shared between four from £75 (Armorique) is excellent value. For overnight crossings, a cabin is strongly recommended for all passenger types.

🚢 Armorique vs Pont-Aven

Armorique operates most sailings. Self-service restaurant only, 247 cabins on decks 8 and 9. Pont-Aven is Brittany Ferries’ flagship — larger, with the à la carte restaurant Le Flora, a spa, piano bar Le Fastnet, and a heated pool on deck 9 (daytime sailings, May–September). 650 cabins on decks 5, 6 and 8. Operates selected Fridays (daytime) and selected Tuesdays (overnight).

⚠️ Overnight rule for all passengers: Whether you’re in a car, motorhome, on a motorcycle, or travelling as a foot passenger — everyone must book a cabin or reserved seat for overnight crossings. You cannot remain in your vehicle on the car deck during the sailing. See our full cabins guide for all grades and prices on both ships.

Understanding Passenger Categories

The Plymouth to Roscoff ferry welcomes all types of passengers, with different procedures, facilities, and requirements for each.

Vehicle Passengers vs Foot Passengers

The most fundamental distinction on any ferry is whether you’re bringing a vehicle. Vehicle passengers (cars, vans, motorhomes, motorcycles, caravans) check in at the drive-through lanes, board in their vehicle, park on the car deck, then walk up to the passenger decks. Foot passengers (including cyclists) check in at the terminal building and board via the direct gangway at Plymouth Millbay — no shuttle needed. At Roscoff, a ramp-equipped shuttle bus connects the terminal to the ship for all passengers. Cost-wise, vehicle passengers pay considerably more: foot passengers travel from £38 per person, while a car plus two passengers starts from £117. The trade-off is freedom — vehicle passengers can explore Brittany and beyond at their own pace, while foot passengers travel lighter and onward by bus, train, or bike from Roscoff.

Age Groups & Children’s Fares

Children aged 4–15 travel at half the adult fare on all Plymouth to Roscoff sailings. Children under 4 travel free. All children — including infants — need their own valid passport. Pre-bookable cots are available for infants up to 24 months (maximum one cot per cabin, must be requested at booking). Both ships have baby changing facilities on decks 6 and 7, a children’s soft play area, and the Ferrynauts augmented reality app for ages 7–13.

Special Requirements

Passengers with specific needs should contact Brittany Ferries at least 48 hours before departure if they have any special travel requirements that may affect their journey. This includes wheelchair users and reduced mobility passengers (adapted cabin on Armorique — very limited, book early), passengers travelling with medical equipment or requiring dietary needs, and those wishing to note a cabin deck preference (call 0330 159 7000, Mon–Fri 09:00–18:00, Sat–Sun 09:00–16:30 — preference noted but not guaranteed). An Autism booklet is available at check-in on request on both ships.

Club Voyage Loyalty Programme

Frequent travellers can save significantly through Brittany Ferries’ Club Voyage loyalty scheme. Membership costs £130 in the first year (£60 registration + £70 annual fee) and provides up to 35% off ferry fares, free or discounted cabins on qualifying day sailings, 10% off all onboard restaurants, a €12.50 food and drink voucher on overnight crossings, and 50% off onboard Wi-Fi. If you’re planning multiple crossings, it’s worth calculating whether membership pays for itself.
