Plymouth to Roscoff Travel Guide: Getting Here & Where to Go
This Plymouth to Roscoff travel guide covers the two things you need to plan your crossing: how to reach Plymouth Millbay from wherever you are in the UK, and where to go once you arrive in Roscoff. Plymouth is well connected by road and rail from across the UK — Cornwall, Devon, Wales, the Midlands and London all have straightforward routes to the port. On the French side, Roscoff puts you at the gateway to western Brittany and Finistère, with some of France’s finest roads, coastlines and towns immediately ahead.
Plymouth is well connected by road and rail from across the UK. It is the natural port for Cornwall, Devon and Wales, but is equally accessible from the Midlands, Bristol and London. Here are journey times and tips from the main regions that use this route.
📍 From Cornwall
Truro: ~1h 20–1h 30 min by car Penzance: ~1h 50 min (Tamar Bridge) or ~2 hrs (Torpoint Ferry) ⚠️ Toll applies on both crossings for all Cornwall traffic Train: Truro ~1 hr | Penzance ~1h 30 min (GWR direct)
Plymouth is Cornwall’s nearest ferry port to France. The A38 runs almost all the way from the Tamar crossing to the port gates — one of the most straightforward drives in the UK to a ferry terminal. No need to consider Portsmouth or Dover.
📍 From Devon
Exeter: ~1 hr by car Torquay / Paignton: ~1 hr by car Train: Exeter ~50 min | Torquay ~50 min (GWR) Parking: Millbay from £3.30/2hrs | Coypool P&R free 24hrs
Plymouth is in Devon — the A38 Devon Expressway runs directly to the port. GWR trains from Exeter run roughly every 30 minutes. Coypool Park & Ride (PL7 4TB) is free for 24 hours and a good option if you’d rather not drive to the terminal itself.
📍 From Wales
Cardiff: ~2h 40 min+ by car Swansea: ~3–4 hrs by car Train: Cardiff ~2h 15 min direct (GWR) Route: M4 east → M5 south → A38
Many Welsh travellers choose Plymouth over Portsmouth — it’s a direct motorway run and you arrive deeper into Brittany. The M4/M5/A38 combination involves no urban complexity. GWR runs direct trains from Cardiff Central with no changes.
🚆 Travelling from further afield
GWR direct services: London Paddington 3–3.5 hrs | Bristol Parkway ~1h 30 min | Birmingham ~2h 30 min (change at Bristol). The Night Riviera sleeper departs London Paddington around midnight and arrives Plymouth at 05:22 — ideal for catching a daytime sailing without an early morning start.

Choosing Your Sailing
Two types of crossing operate on the Plymouth to Roscoff route. Which suits you depends on where you’re coming from and what you want from your first day in France.
No cabin required — recliner seats available or upgrade to a cabin. Perfect for Cornwall and Devon travellers who can drive to Plymouth after lunch. You arrive in Roscoff with an evening ahead of you.
Cabin or reserved seat required. Perfect for Wales, Bristol and London travellers who can drive down in the evening. You wake up in France with a full day ahead. *Arrival varies by up to 1 hour due to tidal conditions — unique to Roscoff.
💡 Which suits you? If you’re in Cornwall or Devon, the Friday daytime Pont-Aven is the natural choice — drive up after lunch, arrive in Roscoff in time for dinner. If you’re in Wales, Bristol or further north, the overnight sailing makes more sense — drive down in the evening, sleep on the crossing, and have a full day in Brittany when you arrive.
