Car Hire Roscoff: Hiring a Car at Roscoff Ferry Port (2026–2027 Guide)

Car hire in Roscoff is easiest with Europcar, which has a rental desk inside the Roscoff ferry terminal at Port de Bloscon. You can step off the ferry, clear passport control and collect your keys in the same building. The catch: the desk only opens Tuesday to Friday, with short hours, so whether you can drive away straight off the boat depends on which sailing you book.

Searching for car hire Roscoff France options near the ferry? This guide covers where the desk is, its opening hours, exactly which 2026 and 2027 Plymouth to Roscoff sailings line up with them, Roscoff car hire prices (including automatics), insurance and excess, what to bring, and whether hiring beats taking your own car to Brittany.

Last updated: September 2026. Desk hours and prices checked on Europcar’s booking site in September 2026; sailing times checked against the Brittany Ferries 2026 and 2027 timetables. Hours, prices and sailings can change, so always confirm when you book.

Roscoff Car Hire Prices

We checked Europcar Roscoff prices in September 2026 for pick-ups between November 2026 and mid-August 2027, and the same car types were offered across that whole period. The daily prices below come from a late-season search, so treat them as the lowest you are likely to see: expect similar or higher, especially in summer.

Car (or similar) Class Gearbox Seats / doors Boot size (suitcases*) From per day Basic excess
Fiat 500 Mini Manual 4 / 3 Small (1) ~£27 £1,762
Renault Clio Economy Manual 5 / 5 Medium (2) ~£29 £1,762
Peugeot 208 Economy Automatic 5 / 5 Medium (2) ~£33 £1,762
Kia Ceed Compact Manual 5 / 5 Large (3) ~£34 £2,203
Peugeot 308 Compact Automatic 5 / 5 Large (3) ~£39 £2,203
Volkswagen Golf Estate Compact Automatic 5 / 5 Extra large (4) ~£44 £2,203
Mercedes-Benz A-Class Premium (brand guaranteed) Automatic 5 / 5 Large (3) ~£44 £3,084
Renault Captur Compact Manual 5 / 5 Large (3) ~£53 £2,203
Peugeot 2008 Compact Automatic 5 / 5 Large (3) ~£74 £2,203

Cheapest time to hire: in our checks, late-season pick-ups in early November were the cheapest we found. Summer dates cost more, so book early for July and August.

*Suitcase numbers are Europcar’s own figures for large suitcases. You can usually fit soft bags and backpacks around them, under the seats or in the passenger footwells. Prices checked on Europcar’s UK booking site in September 2026; they depend on your dates and are not guaranteed. “Or similar” means you get a car of the same class, not necessarily that exact model.

💳

Paying online when you book was around 9% cheaper than choosing to pay at the desk on arrival.

Free cancellation

Cancel free of charge up to 48 hours before your pick-up time, handy if your ferry plans change.

Automatic Car Hire Roscoff

Only drive automatics? You are well covered: five of the nine car types at Europcar Roscoff were automatic when we checked. The cheapest automatic, a Peugeot 208 or similar, was around £33 a day, about £6 a day more than the cheapest manual. An automatic also means one less thing to think about while you get used to driving on the right.

The automatics are the Peugeot 208 (from ~£33), Peugeot 308 (from ~£39), VW Golf Estate (from ~£44, the biggest boot), Mercedes-Benz A-Class (from ~£44) and Peugeot 2008 (from ~£74), all shown with their boot sizes in the cars above.

💡

Book your automatic in advance

If you need an automatic, reserve one online rather than hoping to swap at the desk. The cheapest cars at the branch are manual, and you want the gearbox you booked waiting for you when you step off the ferry.

Car Hire Insurance, Excess and Deposit at Roscoff

Every Europcar Roscoff rental includes Basic protection: a collision damage waiver (CDW) and theft protection, but it leaves you liable for a large excess if the car is damaged or stolen. You can reduce that excess at the booking stage.

Protection plan Cost Excess (small cars)
Basic Included £1,762.33
Medium ~£18.14 per day £440.58
Premium ~£25.20 per day £0

Excess shown for Mini and Economy cars. Basic excess rises to £2,202.91 for Compact cars and £3,084.08 for the Mercedes A-Class. Plan prices vary by date.

Extras are one-off charges for the whole rental, as quoted during a sample Europcar booking in September 2026. Prices can change.

💡

Weigh up the excess

Premium cover adds roughly £25 a day, so over a week it can cost more than the hire itself. Some travellers buy standalone car hire excess insurance before they travel instead. Compare the cost and what each covers before you decide.

💳 Deposit, fuel and cancellation

💳

Security deposit

At pick-up, Europcar blocks a deposit on your payment card. It is held, not taken, and covers extras such as missing fuel or an extra day. Choose the Medium plan (lower excess) and the deposit drops to €300; choose Premium (zero excess) and it drops to €100. If you haven’t prepaid, the rental price is blocked on top.

⏳

Getting the deposit back

Europcar releases the deposit 4 working days after your final invoice. If you cancel after the deposit has been blocked, it can take up to 30 days to come back.

⛽

Fuel policy

Return the car with the same amount of fuel you collected it with, or pay for Europcar’s refuelling service (price given at pick-up). There’s a filling station in Roscoff itself, with Super U and E.Leclerc filling stations in Saint-Pol-de-Léon about 4–5 km away.

🔄

Changes and cancellations

Changes are free up to the start of the rental day (the price may change). Cancelling is free up to 48 hours before pick-up; after that it costs £45, or the rental price if lower. If you don’t turn up and haven’t cancelled, the charge is €192, or the rental price if lower.

Deposit, fuel and cancellation terms from Europcar’s policies for rentals in France, checked September 2026.

Driving Your Hire Car from Roscoff: Key French Rules

A hire car from Roscoff is left-hand drive with French plates, so you won’t need headlight beam deflectors or a UK sticker. Everything else about driving in France applies from the moment you leave the terminal. These are the rules that most often catch UK drivers out.

↕️

Priorité à droite

At many unmarked junctions, traffic from the right has priority, even if you feel you’re on the main road. Brittany has a lot of these junctions. A yellow diamond sign means you have priority.

🏘️

The town sign is the limit

The 50 km/h limit starts at the town’s name sign. There is no separate speed limit sign, so watch for village names on quiet D-roads.

🌧️

Lower limits in the rain

When it’s raining, dual carriageways drop from 110 to 100 km/h and motorways from 130 to 110 km/h.

🍷

Stricter drink-drive limit

The limit is 50mg per 100ml of blood, lower than the 80mg limit in England and Wales. Take care if you drank on the overnight crossing.

📵

No phones, even hands-free

Hands-free calls, earpieces and headphones are all banned while driving, with a €135 fine.

🚫

No speed camera alerts

Radar detectors and camera alerts on sat navs and phone apps are illegal, with fines up to €1,500. Switch them off before you set off.

🚗

Read the full driving guide before you set off

Car Hire Roscoff vs Taking Your Own Car

Is it cheaper to cross as foot passengers and hire a car, or to take your own car on the ferry? It depends on how long you need a car. Here is how it works out using the starting fares.

Foot passengers + hire car
£76 each way
Two foot passengers from £38 each
Plus hire from ~£27 a day (~£189 a week) before extras and fuel
Best for hires of up to about 3 days
Take your own car
£117 each way
Car plus two passengers from £117
About £41 more each way, or £82 for the return trip
For two people, usually cheaper once you need a car for more than 3–4 days

The maths for two people: taking your car costs about £82 more for the return trip than two foot fares. At around £27 a day, hiring passes that after 3 days, so from about 4 days of driving your own car usually works out cheaper, before you even add hire extras. Fuel is the same either way.

More than two of you? Every extra foot passenger pays their own fare, so with three or more people your own car becomes the cheaper option even sooner. On the ferry, children aged 4–15 travel at half price and under-4s travel free. Travelling solo? The gap is bigger, up to around £79 each way against a single £38 foot fare, so hiring can stay cheaper for up to about 5 days.

Hiring makes sense if…

You only need a car for a few days of a longer foot or cycling trip, you don’t own a car, or you would rather not drive a right-hand-drive car on French roads.

Taking your car makes sense if…

You need a car for more than 3–4 days, there are three or more of you, you are travelling with lots of luggage, or your sailings don’t line up with the desk hours. See our taking a vehicle on the ferry guide.

Ferry fares are Brittany Ferries starting prices for the Plymouth to Roscoff route and vary by date and season. Hire prices checked on Europcar’s booking site in September 2026.

Car Hire Roscoff Brittany: Where Can You Go?

A hire car opens up the far west of Brittany. Better still, Brittany has no motorway tolls: the region is served by free dual carriageways with a 110 km/h (68 mph) limit instead. Our driving in France guide has more on Breton roads and routes.

Destination Distance Drive time Guide
Saint-Pol-de-Léon 4 miles (6 km) 10 mins Day trip →
Carantec 11 miles (18 km) 20 mins Day trip →
Morlaix 16 miles (26 km) 25 mins Day trip →
Brest 40 miles (66 km) 55 mins Day trip →
Pink Granite Coast (Côte de Granit Rose) 37 miles (60 km) 55 mins Day trip →
Quimper 58 miles (94 km) 1 hr 10 mins —

Drive times are approximate and depend on traffic.

Heading further? From Roscoff it’s around 1 hour 30 minutes to Rennes, 2 hours 30 minutes to Nantes and about 5 hours to Paris. Tolls only start once you leave Brittany. Closer to home, Morlaix is worth a stop for its huge railway viaduct and old town.

A car also makes it easy to reach spots that are awkward by bus, such as the Cairn de Barnenez, Locquirec and the Château du Taureau boat trips from Carantec. You won’t need it for the Île de Batz, which is a 10-minute foot ferry from Roscoff harbour.

Returning Your Hire Car Before the Ferry Home

The same desk hours apply when you drop the car off, so plan your return sailing too. Remember foot passenger check-in closes 45 minutes before departure.

Easiest return sailings (2027)

The Thursday 15:00 and Friday 16:30 sailings from Roscoff. Return the car in that morning’s 10:00–12:00 slot.

Easiest return sailings (2026)

The Thursday and Friday 14:30 sailings (to 22 and 23 October) and Thursday 29 October at 15:35. Return the car that morning.

Harder: weekend and Monday sailings

Most other return sailings leave on Saturday, Sunday or Monday, when the Roscoff desk is closed. The 2026 Wednesday 09:00 Pont-Aven leaves before the desk opens.

💡

Sailing home at the weekend or on a Monday?

Ask Europcar Roscoff about returning the car outside opening hours before you book. Side note: Europcar’s Morlaix branch, about 35 minutes away by bus, accepts returns 24/7. Returning there instead of Roscoff costs around £50 extra.

What to Do If the Desk Is Closed When You Arrive

If your sailing arrives on a Saturday, Sunday or Monday, or after the desk has shut, you still have options.

🏨

Wait for Tuesday

Spend a couple of nights in Roscoff, with its Notre-Dame de Croaz-Batz church, the Jardin Exotique and thalassotherapy spas, then collect your car from the ferry terminal on Tuesday morning. Our Roscoff guide has plenty more.

🚌

Go car-free

Roscoff town is a 15-minute walk from the port, the Ligne 29 bus runs to Morlaix for trains, and the Rosko Bus runs in summer. See the foot passenger guide.

⛴️

Bring your own car

Your car is ready the moment you drive off, whatever the day. See our guide to taking a vehicle on the ferry.

🏢

Or try Europcar Morlaix

If the Roscoff desk is closed, check out Europcar’s Morlaix branch at 94 rue Gambetta, about 35 minutes from Roscoff on the Ligne 29 bus. It has a larger variety of cars than Roscoff, and you book it through the same Europcar link by choosing Morlaix as your pick-up point.

Opening hours: Monday to Friday 08:00–12:00 and 14:00–18:00, Saturday 09:00–12:00 and 14:00–17:00, closed Sunday. After-hours pick-up and return are available at an extra charge, and returns are accepted 24/7.

Dropping off in Morlaix: you can also collect your car in Roscoff and return it in Morlaix, then take the bus back to the ferry. That helps if your sailing home leaves when the Roscoff desk is closed. Returning to a different branch costs around £50 extra.

Car Hire Roscoff: Frequently Asked Questions

Is there car hire at Roscoff ferry port?

Yes. Europcar has a car hire desk inside the Roscoff ferry terminal (Gare Maritime) at Port de Bloscon, so foot passengers can collect a car in the same building they arrive in. The desk opens Tuesday to Friday only.

What are the Europcar Roscoff opening hours?

Tuesday to Thursday 10:00–12:00 and 14:30–16:30, and Friday 10:00–12:00. The desk is closed on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, and hours may vary on French public holidays. Pick-up slots run every 15 minutes within these hours.

Can I collect a hire car straight off the ferry at Roscoff?

Only on some sailings. In 2027 the Monday 22:00 Armorique and the Thursday 20:30 Pont-Aven from Plymouth both arrive at 08:00 on a day the desk opens. For the rest of 2026, the Monday, Tuesday and Thursday overnight sailings work. Friday daytime, Friday-night, Saturday and Sunday sailings arrive when the desk is closed.

How much is car hire in Roscoff?

When we checked in September 2026, Europcar Roscoff prices started from around £27 a day for a Fiat 500 or similar and went up to around £74 a day for a Peugeot 2008 automatic. Prices depend on your dates, and summer is likely to cost more. Unlimited mileage and basic protection are included.

Can I get automatic car hire in Roscoff?

Yes. Five of the nine car types at Europcar Roscoff were automatic when we checked, starting from around £33 a day for a Peugeot 208 or similar. Book an automatic online in advance rather than asking at the desk.

Can I collect a hire car in Roscoff on a Saturday, Sunday or Monday?

No. Europcar Roscoff is closed on Saturday, Sunday and Monday and next opens on Tuesday at 10:00. If your ferry arrives on one of those days, you can collect the car on Tuesday, choose a Monday-night or Thursday-night sailing that arrives when the desk is open, or take your own car on the ferry. Europcar’s Morlaix branch, about 35 minutes away by bus, is also open on Mondays and Saturdays.

Do I need an International Driving Permit to hire a car in Roscoff, France?

No. GOV.UK confirms UK licence holders don’t need an International Driving Permit to drive in France. Bring your full UK photocard licence, held for at least one year, along with your passport and a credit card.

What documents do I need to rent a car in Roscoff, France?

Bring your full UK photocard driving licence (held for at least one year), your passport and a credit card for the deposit, plus your booking confirmation. Europcar may also ask to check your driving record, so get a free DVLA check code from GOV.UK before you travel. You don’t need an International Driving Permit.

What is the minimum age to rent a car in Roscoff?

Europcar’s Roscoff listings show a minimum driving age of 18, but every driver under 26 must pay the Young Driver Cover, quoted at £246.70 for the whole rental in our sample booking. You also need to have held your full licence for at least one year.

Can I rent a car in Roscoff without a credit card?

It’s best not to try. Europcar asks for a valid credit card at pick-up and blocks a security deposit on it, so a debit card may not be accepted. Bring a credit card in the main driver’s name with enough available limit for the deposit and, if you haven’t prepaid, the rental price.

How much is the deposit for car hire in Roscoff?

Europcar blocks a security deposit on your payment card at pick-up. It is held, not taken, and released 4 working days after your final invoice.
